There is no disputing the growing impact of computers and the internet on all our lives, and especially our children. Parents and caregivers have a special responsibility to care for their children just as much when they are online as when they are undertaking other activities. Positive Computing for Parents (PCP) has been developed to support parents and caregivers in this role.
Positive Computing for parents and caregivers is a national programme promoting best practice in the use of ICT in the home. It covers such topics as choosing ICT products for the home, where to place them, Internet safety, how to help children with their use of computers for homework, communication, games, etc.
Participants will have an understanding of how computers may be used within the home
Participants will have the background information to make decisions about accessing, purchasing, and upgrading computers for the home
Participants will have a basic understanding of the technical requirements of setting up a computer, installing software, and ongoing maintenance. They will be able to make decisions about computer placement within the home, considering OOS requirements and Internet safety
Participants will understand how to support children's learning by assisting them to access, retrieve, process and present information in a safe, online environment
Participants will understand how computers may be used to interact with others and will be aware of the positive and negative aspects of this
Participants will understand how computer games may be used for educational and recreational purposes. They will have background information on gaming - connections required, variety of games available online including those that require payment, examples of online learning games, restricted games, e.g. R18
